Industrial, Commercial, & Institutional Used Cooking Oil Recycling

The Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK) recognizes that there are currently limited disposal options for used cooking oil. As such, Staff are seeking information to better understand how industrial, commercial, and institutional (ICI) producers of used cooking oil in our region currently dispose of it and how they could use support to ensure safe and easy disposal.

Additionally, one of the goals of the RDCK’s Resource Recovery Plan is to support the establishment of and promote local circular economy projects. The recycling of used cooking oil into biofuel is an initiative that could provide a safe disposal option for used cooking oil producers while promoting a circular economy.

The RDCK is gathering information from ICI sector producers of used cooking oil to learn about:

• Estimated volumes of used cooking oil being produced by the ICI sector in our communities;
• The types of programs that currently exist to safely dispose of or recycle used cooking oil in our region;
• What barriers exist to accessing these programs and how these could be reduced to ensure that used cooking oil can be disposed of safely and easily;
• How the RDCK could support existing and/or new used cooking oil recovery programs.
